Accessible resources at Enfield Libraries

When you have a medical condition, physical impairment, or other additional need, reading and using computers can become more challenging. Luckily, here at Enfield Libraries we have you covered.

Our libraries provide a number of different resources that help you read books when you have additional needs. Here, you can take a tour of some of the various accessibility supports we provide.

Large print books

If you’re visually impaired or generally have trouble seeing, large print books make it easier to read books. All of the books in this section have larger font.

Like the adult fiction section, we arrange fiction large print books in alphabetical order by the author’s surname. In addition, you can find mystery, romance, nonfiction, and crime books in the large print section.

Adult fiction large print book: NYPD Red 3 by James Patterson and Marshall Karp

Prolific and much-read author James Patterson, with co-author Marshall Karp, has many books available in large print. In this crime novel, New York’s best detectives get involved in a murderous game of cat-and-mouse to save millionaire Hunter Alden Jr.’s family.

Audio books

Audio books read books to you, so if you aren’t able to see the larger font in large print options, these are a fantastic option. You might also enjoy our audio book collection if you’d like to read while driving or doing other activities.

We have many available audio books for children and adults in the relevant sections. You can find them alphabetized in the children and adult sections of the library.

As a bonus, some audio books are narrated by famous actors, who use their talents to bring the books fully alive!

Adult audio book: Bridget Jones’s Baby by Helen Fielding

Bridget Jones is such a beloved character, these books have been made into award-winning films as well as an audio book. In this funny and lively book across four CDs, Bridget Jones finds her biological clock ticking.

When she discovers she’s expecting, there’s only one problem: she’s not such which man she’s dating is the father! What follows is a series of laughter and love as Bridget builds her family.

Children’s audio book: Treehouse Tales by Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton

This popular children’s series by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton is available in audio book format as well! Stig Wemyss, a popular audiobooks narrator in Australia who has won multiple awards, is the reader of this series.

At one hour and 15 minutes, these 13 magical treehouse stories will keep your child entertained through the afternoon. Each funny adventure features Andy, Terry, and their hilarious sense of humour.

ABiSee Vision Aid

This remarkable device can help you read any book in the library or any other text you bring. When you place any relevant text under the machine, it scans the text and reads it out loud for you.

If you’d like to read the text yourself but need it to be a bit bigger, the ABiSee also has a magnifying function. It enables you to choose the level of magnification comfortable for you to read the text.

Dyslexia friendly books

Dyslexia can make reading more challenging. For children and teenagers who are learning to read with dyslexia, we have special sections of books friendly to readers with dyslexia.

Dyslexic books are age-appropriate, while using fonts, spacing, and wording that make it easier for readers with dyslexia to decode the text. They’re edited especially for readers with dyslexia in mind.

Child dyslexia friendly book: All To Play For

Lewis’ biggest dream is to make it as a football player. Can he overcome the obstacles put forward by his family in order to follow his talents?

Teen dyslexia friendly book: True Sisters

Ruby’s new foster sister is struggling to fit in to her new family after growing up in a fully isolated home. Can Ruby help Clara, while coming to terms with some of the personal struggles Clara has made her realise she’s facing?
